| For a long time I felt very alone. I wondered if anybody shared my views on loving your country, respecting the flag and that serving in the Armed Forces was and always will be an honor. I wondered what Viet Nam was all about and whether anybody would remember us. The early this year I found this web site. Things for me began to change. I didn't feel alone in my opinions anymore. On these pages were the guys who generally felt the same way I did. I'm so glad that I found the page and them again. Once again a beautiful heavy cruiser is taking me home. Thanks for everything and mostly thanks for being my shipmates. Merry Christmas. As I sit home enjoying the holidays I will remember that I can do that because of all you guys who wore uniforms and the ones who still do. | |

| search article in the Beam Rider on replenishing at sea, photo of sailers removing eight-inch from pallets, caption reads 270 lbs. The best part of replenishing was taking on fresh fruit, most of the time the only thing that made it to the end of the line were the crates. | |

| Hey thanks Gary, You are correct those 8 inch shells were too big to carry. I stand corrected. The ship did have some 5 inch guns possibly that is what we carried on our shoulders. The lighest 8 inch shell for the Boston was about 230 pounds. And you are correct that most of us are too old to be toting around projectiles anymore. Old age does that. Anyway Merry Christmas to all the shipmates. | |

| My recollection is 335 pounds for the 8" 50 cal. projectile, 54 pounds for the 5" 38 cal. projectile. Contrast this with the two types of projectiles fired by IOWA-class battleships: 1,900 pounds and 2,700 pounds, respectively. I believe the projectiles fired by DES MOINES-class cruisers (8" 55 cal.) were a bit heavier than ours on the BOSTON. | |

| Wesley, seems to me that I remember the armor piercing projectiles weighing in at about 360 lbs. The ones you packed on your shoulders were probably a more standard round, probably less than 300 lbs. Some of the gunners can probably tell me if I'm "all wet" on this fact. I don't think many of us could pick up a 300lb bullet today. | |

| One question to any of the gunners on the old ship? How much did the 8" projectiles weigh? I remember toting them on my shoulder along with the other shipmates and it seemed like they were a ton after a day of lugging them to the lift. We shot up a lot of those rounds in '68. Nothing could beat good old fun exercising under the tropical sun on an "exotic" Asian cruise, right? | |

| Seeing some of the Veteran's Day comments made me very happy. When I got out in July 1969 I promised myself that I would never speak to draft dodgers or war protestors again. Protesting is one thing, you have a right to do that. Spitting on people in uniform and causing physical violence is another thing and not under the realm of protest. I served with over 1200 brave and honorable men. None of us have anything to be ashamed of. Thanks for the comments. | |

| I want to extend a smart hand salute to all veterans, and I also want to share something with you. This is dedicated to all veterans, especially Roberto Ramos, Seal Team 2, KIA, Oct 29, 1968. He was a shipmate I was stationed with in Pensacola , we were training to volunteer for UDT, but as fate would have it I got transferred to the USS BOSTON. YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN!!!!!!! Has it been thirty-two years, since the shedding of that first tear. A young man answering his country’s call, stood tall, and without hesitation, laid his life down for his nation . His name now appears along with 58,000 or more, etched on a black granite wall, a constant reminder to us all, of their love of country and dedication. He was not a politician, therefore not privy to make policy decisions. He did not spend time deciding what was wrong or right. He made the ultimate sacrifice, so others would not have to pay the price. Young men who were cursed and spat upon, but found the strength to hold their heads up high and carry on. They knew they would have to go, or some else would have to pay the toll. They would not dare, allow someone else to take their place , but relied strictly on their God and their fate. They are the true heroes , who do not endorse athletic gear , but their names ring forever in a love ones ear. someone once said “a man is not dead, until forgotten”. | |

| It is great to find this website. I was turned on to it by another shipmate and lifelong friend. I took out my cruise book of 1968 Nam tour, and it brought back many wonderful memories. In fact I just found the website of the USS Purvis that my father had served on in the 1940's. Will try and make reunion to see if there are any old shipmates from my time on board that great ship. | |

| I visit the site often searching for A division sailors from 1959 to 1964. So far not many have signed the deck log. Also please feel free to visit the A division web site at adivisionussboston.bizland.com You may see some one you know if you served on the Boston in this time frame. The Boston was special to me. Of course I didn't really know it then. If any one who reads this knows of the where abouts of any one that was in A division during the era 1959-1964, please let me hear from you either by e-mail or snail mail or even a quick phone call at 843-821-8540. | |

| I sent a message of condolence and encouragement to the crew of the USS COLE, on behalf of
all USS BOSTON Shipmates everywhere. I couldn't help thinking about "what ifs": What if we had built the ARLEIGH BURKE ships around nuclear power? What if we could afford to have an AO out there? What if we could afford more small boats aboard our ships, with which to establish a secure perimeter around one of our ships in port? What if we could deploy our ships with 100% staffing, to permit more watch staffing? |

And sailors everywhere will grieve as well. My suggestion is that if the perpertrators can be found that very severe retaliation be carried out on these parties. What a despicable act! They were refueling the ship when it happened. Somewhere tonight mothers and fathers will be grieving. My heart goes out to all of them.

| 1967-JAN 70, was a Journalist 3rd, then 2nd class under Public Affairs Officers Dale Davenport & Oakley. "Good Evening, Men of Boston"--that was me doing nightly newscast on 1-MC. Great memories--just one: seeing Boo Boo Muru from Victoria Peak, Hong Kong. GREAT PEOPLE: JO2 Thackery, Jim Mancuso, Ellis Baldwin, James Marcus Brown, Chris Brown, Mike Morris, Mr. Polk, where are you? Saw Dale Davenport's photo online as a Pennsylvania publication's editor. Subsequently for me: UPI, F.C.C., General Electric Broadcasting, Became a USNR PAO (okay--I screwed up, someone saw it, and said-- "son, you're officer material"). Was 1 of the 4 USNR PAO commanders based out of the "blue domes" / Dhahran / ODS; then, last summer, got to be a movie advisor in LA on the experience. ODS, for some scary, few moments was the first time since BOSTON's gunline time of OP SEADRAGON, etc., that was as memorable--being "...shot at without result" as Churchill quipped. (USUALLY "without result"--except when "Made at Raytheon--Waltham, Massachusetts" shrapnel landed on BOSTON's deck--anyone remember that?). A most cherished possession: a copy of the "extra" of USS BOSTON's paper, typed out at about 0200 (?) when I heard "We Made It--Man Lands on Moon." I'll try to scan it and get it online to you all, along with a shot of "Hoey" Hoenstein and Chuck Wayne ("Chuck Wayne SWING TRAIN, formerly of WLS, Chicago, on "WBOS") at the Sampagita (sp?) I have made contact with some of my shipmates I was looking for and found others who have contacted me. It has been a wonderful experience and made me realize how special my time on the USS Boston was because of the shipmates I had the pleasure to serve with. I take great pleasure in reading the deck log every few days. A few weeks ago Dave Goodall praise the individuals who made this web site a labor of love. Even though I am new to the shipmate organization and hope to attend my first reunion maybe in 2001; I to would like to join Dave Goodall in stating I am very appreciative of the labor of love that Art Herbert and others have lavished on this web site on our behalf. | |

| I'd like to attach excerpts from the 7/4/68 message from Cap't LeonI. Smith Jr to the crew: "Now that Boston has celebrated her 25th birthday, I want to talk to you about tradition. We in the Boston are upholding tradition which dates to the first year of Independence-1776- when the name Boston first appeared in the annals of the country's fighting Navy. Every round we fire in Vietnam puts another ounce of tradition in our ship. When USS Boston (CA-69) was retired to the mothball fleet with her sister ships less than 3 years after her 1943 commissioning, she had already gained an impressive record as a fighting ship. Carrying forward the tradition begun by the tiny armed gondola Uss Boston of 1776, CA-69 steamed through ten major campaigns of the Pacific Theatre during WW II and was present at the surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay in 1945. But Boston's rebirth- or reincarnation, if you will- in 1955 as CAG-1, put new life into the Boston tradition. Today, a quarter of a century since WW II, the world's first guided missile cruiser is piling up firsts in the Vietnam War, at an age when most ships would be put out to pasture. Boston is adding mark upon mark to the record of excellencecompiled by six ships of the fleet to sail under the name. During our last month on the gun line off the DMZ, we fired 17,000 bullets- 3,000 more than during our entire 1967 deployment to Southeast Asia. And on 3 July (which, by the way, marked one year in command for me), we fired more than 1,000 8" shells for the first time since Boston was recommissioned. Boston must stand among a select few fighting ships measured for stamina and endurance. This alone makes the tradition of USS Boston stand as a pillar of power at sea for the United States. My congratulations to each of you for a job well done." | |

It is great to visit this website and hear from old friends checking in that, quite frankly, I never thought I would see or hear from again. Hope to see many shipmates and others who served on Boston at the 2001 reunion. I have a question: Was there a 68 cruisebook published? Or were we too busy shooting H&I, shooting counter-battery and rearming to publish one - I can't remember? I have a 67 and 69 cruisebook, but no 68. If someone has a copy, please bring it to the 2001 reunion. Mitch, you and Bill have not changed! Thanks for the pictures.

| This log just gets better and better. We keep finding people and spreading the word. I'm getting e-mail from guys I haven't talked to in over 30 years. Some of the quoted stuff from the Vietnam cruises brings back such powerful memories. I was thinking about Art's question about the caliber of men we had throughout BOSTON'S history, and I have to believe that the ships had something-character, tradition, history, personality, spirit, whatever-that brought out the best in her men. Even today, the experience promotes loyalty and dedication far beyond the norm. Most of us have developed life-long friendships with some of our shipmates, and as someone just wrote, we bond with BOSTON sailors from any era at the reunions as easily as we did with the men with whom we served personally. There has to be something very special that causes that to happen besides the common experiences we shared. Over my life, I have shared experiences-difficult or pleasant-in many circumstances-school, sports, work, leisure, even family-that I have never shared or remembered as closly as those with BOSTON shipmates. What a living gift we recieved when each of reported aboard. We are so lucky to be able to share it again through this site, the Shipmates organization and reunions. Thanks, all. Dave | |

| I've never decided whether the USS BOSTON attracted good men, or good men gravitated toward the BOSTON, or some higher power selected good men to be assigned to the BOSTON... But I'm sure it's one of those. And, I've had a lot of men tell me---Officers and Sailors alike---that serving on the BOSTON was good for their careers. Second observation I want to share is that I've attended every annual USS BOSTON reunion since 1987, and I'm continually amazed at how the people from all walks of life, from all BOSTON crews, mix and bond together immediately and permanently. Many of these seemingly mismatched (by age, mainly) folks find such deep common ties that they find themselves getting together with other BOSTON people in between our reunions. Birds of a feather, I guess. | |

| As far as I know, our Navy minesweepers were all named after birds (Turkey, Lark, etc.). I frequently find references to "BOSTONs" that divers find here and there. When I track them down, I find that they are commercial ships with Boston in their name, or something completely different. For example, the University of Florida dive school published an article about diving on the USS BOSTON, which was sunk as a man-made reef off the Florida coast. I determined that it was actually an old U.S. Navy battleship MASSACHUSETTS. When I wrote to the school to clear that up, they responded with something like, "Massachusetts... Boston... it's all the same, isn't it?" A paramilitary magazine has published a story about a USS BOSTON that fought during our Civil War. There were two problems with that. First, I determined that it was actually a commercial ship named Boston that the Union Navy had hired to carry cargo. Second, we didn't prefix our naval ships with U.S.S. until 1922, well after the Civil War. One other vessel named Boston has cropped up... This was a coastal steamer named SS Boston (Steamship Boston) that was about to be retired from island service (around New England and New York City) when the Navy leased it to serve as a hospital ship in Boston Harbor. I have old photos of that ship, and some small artifacts from it. It sort of looks like a white ferry boat. | |

It is my hope that as new men check in, they will each consider becoming a dues paying member, maybe even a life member, to continue this labor of love. This sight and this great organization need to be here for all the BOSTON sailors who look back on their service on CA-69, CAG-1 and SSN-703 with affectionate memories. The only way that can happen is for us to support the USS BOSTON SHIPMATES, INC. Dave

When he found out that I was on the Boo Boo Maru and was a firecontrolman he wouldn't let me spend a dime - - he was with one of the USMC units that we supported during TET and he directly attributes the Boston gunfire support with saving his life. This should give the ENTIRE crew a great sense of accomplishment to know that we were as good as we always knew we were. For all the FTM and FTG shipmates out there that are trying to contact the '66 to '70 era Fire Controlmen, I have a few contacts that are not in the Guest Book. Working in Weapons Control but GQ and condition watch in Director 2 I have tried to remained in touch with both missles and guns. I have contact telephone numbers for "Joey" Schaberl, Ken Lussier(Derf), and Ron Pernisi (Bacchi Galoop). If you look in the new and old Guest Books you will find e-mail addresses for Chris Barr, Marty Carbaugh, Dave Goodall, Jim Bunzy, Mithchell "Sally" Perrin, Reggie Mitchell, Joe Vetre, and possibly others. Each of these guys have others that they stayed in contact with and will be happy to share with you any info , I am sure. Remember only the good times while aboard this grand old lady of the sea.

| Thanks for the info. I reported late January 1968 and left in July 1969. My previous duty in the 7th fleet was on the USS DuPont and we saw the Boston a lot off Cap Lay and the DMZ. She was a beautiful ship and kept spotless. When I saw her the first time at South Annex in Boston her decks were shining as was the brass. Very impressive site for a former destroyer man. Thanks again. | |

| I have really enjoyed these last two evenings spent with this site. I served with several shipmates who have logged in already at the site: trying to email to contact folks like Mitch Perrin, Marty Carbaugh, Dennis Solari, Doc Antal, Dave Goodall, Chris Barr and others - I am still reading the emails. Would like to hear from Charles Jones, Shaughnessy, Sam Turnage, and others who served with me in Fox Divion or the Fire Control Divisions (Missile, Main or Secondary Battery). Thanks for a great website. I had no idea such a site existed. I have already had a response from Art Hebert. Hope to see lot's of you in 2001. | |

I remember "OMAR" also. Did the Wardroom ever figure out why the TV reception was never very good when we wanted to watch something on the "moniter" in the ET shop? I hope to be able to attend a reunion someday, I missed Baltimore due to my daughter nearing delivery of our first grandchild. | Found the Deck Log the other day. The recent Russian Kursk disaster brought me back to April 1963 when our own USS Thresher went down. Those of us in the radio shack were the first on the ship to learn of the sinking. CAG1 was in drydock and all we could do was listen to the news. On the USS Massachutts in Fall River, Mass, there is a room dedicated to the USS Boston - Her ships bell is displayed. Seeing that brought back many fond memories of the Boston and my two Med cruises aboard her.

| What a great job at site building, congratulations Art, and all who helped. The Kurst sinking is a horrible reminder of the danger faced by submariners, and I share your sorrow Art.-- My time aboard encompassed three Med cruises, a few Gitmo stops, and a N.Atlantic tour where we saw a mail helicopter flip into rough seas after dropping mail on our bow. He hit one of my discone cage wires and we all sure were happy to see the Marine chopper arrive to pull the Navy pilots out of the high swells of the North Atlantic. Huge respect for Marine pilots plus our own. And many many thanks to all who served in war time. --Look forward to seeing many old friends in Boston in 2001. Side note to John Saari RMC: I too operated from Radio 4 when in US as w9yos/mm, (served as chief op at K9USN at Great Lakes in late '57.) and maintained ssb xmtrs in R4 and antennas outside during my time aboard, plus rcvrs and panels in Radio Central. | I live 50 miles away from Balt. so I knew it was a good choice. The group from B- Div and M- Div (circa 1962-1970) grew even larger in Balt. with the addition of Wampler, and Smitty. I am sure we can add more in Andover. A few years ago, we added Earl & Pat Harris to our group. He was a cook from 64-68 so most of us know him well, and knew better than to not befriend the cook. They know how to have a good time, so they fit in perfectly. Our group must have more fun than any other, if you don't believe that, just watch Brian Sloat turn red, and not be able to get his breath from laughter, after a brew or two. So, any BT's or MM's (1962-1970) from the Boston area hope to see you in July 2001. Morgan. | |

| I boarded "The Mighty B" on a damp and rainy day in October '43 and spent the next 27 months as part of the crew cruising the Pacific. I think it was the greatest experience in our young lives, we were transformed from boys to men in a very short space of time. I have attended 11 of the reunions and I look forward to them each year. Our division, "H", had 16 corpsmen plus 2 MDs and 1 or 2 Dentists. This year(2000) there were 4 of the original group plus the sons of 2 others. The committees that organize these reunions do a fantastic job and deserve a lot of credit for their efforts. If you have never attended any I would highly recommend signing up for Andover next year! | |

| Hello Shipmates, We had another excellent reunion this year in Baltimore. Your committee, as usual, did another fine job entertaining 360 shipmates, wives and guests. I thought the 50's Sock Hop was an excellent addition to this years reunion. Annapolis was great and the Chapel was Beautiful. The Inner Harbor tour for the weekend allowed us to see the how Beautiful and Historic Baltimore is. At our Baltimore reunion in July, many of our shipmates requested that we get our Guest Book working again so they can communicate with their shipmates. As you can see our Deck log is up and running again thanks to the hard work of our Secretary Art Hebert and his friend Brian McCarthy. I personally want to thank them for their time and hard work. I look forward to seeing everyone at our reunion in Andover, Massachusetts next year. Barry L. Probst President USS Boston Shipmates, Inc. | |

| Just found the website and was able to access...It brings back some great memories to read what shipmates have written...without a doubt, the most meaningful years of my life were spent on board the Boo Maru...God bless all, and stay well... | |

| Nice to see the Deck Log (Guestbook) up and running! I served on USS BOSTON (SSN-703) as part of the precommissioning unit through the first deployment around the world. How much we all must have changed since that time! ...Hard to believe that BOSTON is just a part of history again....causes one to pause in reflection. BOSTON was my first and only boat, that makes it especially meaningful. I would like to hear from other shipmates who want to re-establish contact, catch-up in old times etc... | |

| Does anyone remember the night we sideswiped the ALTAIR while we were highlining to them? We were in the Med at the time, probably around 1959-1960. I made four Med cruises on the BOSTON, and which events happened on which Med cruise sort of gets fuzzy after forty years or so. Art | |

| We had 360 Shipmates at the 2000 reunion in Baltimore. There were men from the WW II cruiser BOSTON, from the guided missile cruiser BOSTON, and from the submarine BOSTON. The 2001 reunion will be July 20-21-22, in Andover, Massachusetts. We're planning a full weekend of activities, once again. | |
