Glad to have found this site. I have seen a few folks that I served with while on-board the USS Boston. I hope to hear from some of you that served during the same period of time. Looking back it was a great crew to be part of.

I worked in the personel office at first and then in the print shop and would like to hear from anyone who remembers me. The year 2002 Boston reunion in New Orleans sounds wonderful and I am planning to attend. Hope to see some of you there. The Boston was a great ship & I have many good memories of the almost 2 years spent aboard.

I remember another "dunking". A retiring Chief BM was being highlined and as the ships rolled towards each other the guys on the line stood fast and dunked him bag and baggage right up to his chin. He shook his fist at them but they were too busy laughing to see. I think this was in late 63 or 64. Don Hofmeister

It's been a while since I logged on. Had some computer problems. Nice to see familiar names Like Glin Eden and Jimmy McGuire. Sorry to hear Jimmy passed away at such an early age. I can't say I knew him too well he was an EM and I was an ICman, we didn't hang around together that much. I can't remember the name of the royal baby but I remember his BIG belly being hairless. I thought the royal barber was from my division but can recall his name. I just remember he promised not to mess with my beautiful handlebar mustache......he lied! I was on the sea detail on the bridge when the line broke and Capt. Gordon went in. I remember the exec. standing there for what seemed like the longest time and he just said "I'll be damned" He then gave the order to initiate the "williams turn" to circle the Capt. I also remember Capt. wanted the rescue boat to take him over to the other ship but the Doc. said "no". When he came back aboard they gave him a shot of brandy to help take the chill out. Right before he got in the chair again for another try, he told the corpsman to standby with the whole bottle in case it happened again. He was a helluva Capt.

I recieved my shipmates membership card and made reservations for a hotel room in Baton Rouge for the July 2002 reunion. I am looking foreward to seeing every one there.I was able to return to Singapore several times during the late 80's and early 90's the company I worked for had a manufacturing facility there. Man has that place changed. Boogis street where the sailors used to hang out has been completly rehabilitated. It Now consists ofshops and restaurants the night life in that areahas been cleaned up. The raffles bar was undergoing a complete renovation but you could still get a singapore sling if you didn't mind a little construction. Has anyone else visited any of the libery ports since our last westpac cruise?

I remember that the Royal Barber was an EM1 named Rose. I threatened to throw him over the side if he cut off half my handlebar moustache as he intended. SF1 Berstler sounds familiar for the belly I kissed. How does one forget something like that? Lord knows, I've tried!!!! I'll be off line for a couple of weeks visiting with my 5 children and 12 grandchildren in Boston. I want to take this opportunity to wish all the Shipmates, of any era, a safe, joyous holiday season. Let's all take some time to remember the true meaning of these Holy Days, and give some thought and prayer to those men and women serving far from their families and loved ones, and putting themselves in harm's way to keep these holidays safe for us and to guarantee our right to celebrate them in the future. Merry Christmas to all and Happy New Year!!!!!Big Dave

Back to the Equator again...I showed some friends who had been in the New Navy the pictures that El Jefe had sent me, and I heard that the Navy has gone Politically Correct when crossing the line. It is all voluntary, NO garbage chutes (Some fresh vegetables, water, and maybe a bit of food coloring), NO crawling on hands and knees, NO haircuts, NO really foul tasting medicine (some warm bug-juice with maybe a bit of salt), and NO getting your butt whacked with those bolliveys, or whatever they were called. Not only is a great ship gone, but some great traditions also.

I think the "babies" came after "The Barber", remember the coffins? I think the Royal Court came after the babies, and they watched us being dunked into the pool off the hinged chairs. The hoses in the pool was because someone had lost his "lunch". Then we crawed through the garbage chute, forward of the fantail on the port side. After the chutes I remember taking the fire hose from the guy who hosed me down and hosed down the next shipmate. We were back in Boston before my "haircut" grew back.

I read all the comments everyone makes every few days to feel connected with all the shipmates past, present, and future who have served on the Boston's. To Garry Slankard and Dennis Solari (sorry couldn't make the reunion) and all the shipmates, what I remember the most about crossing the Equator is that during the initiation to becoming a shellback was having to crawl on the teak wood decks of the Boston. All these years later, my knees are still sore when ever I think about it and the scars whatever remainds are a wonderful reminder of some of the good times. I have my shellback certificate hanging in my spare bedroom at home along with the certificate for crossing the international date line. Reading the comments about crossing the Equator brings back wonderful memories. Also, another wonderful memory of the shellback initiation was being hosed down with the fire hose in the canvas water pool after crawling through all that smelly garbage. That hosing down felt good. Good times with great shipmates wouldn't trade the memories for anything. I was up on deck watching the highline when Captain Gordon when in the water. I have made contact with many of my fellow shipmates who I have served with and from time to time and have receive e-mails from them for which I am grateful to remain in touch with them. One shipmate I am still looking to hear from is Doug Boyd FTM2. Take Care Shipmates I am proud to have served with you and to be a part of the Great Boston heritage and tradition.

Hello, I just found this site and was looking for some help. My father James (Jimmy) J. McGuire served on the BOSTON in the Electrical Division. I am looking for someone who knew him to share some stories with. He passed away in 1972. My sister and I would love to talk with some people. We have lots of pictures that he took on board, but no stories to go with them. Thank you.

Will the real Royal Baby please stand up? Garry I hate to throw a wrench in the works, but there were at least two royal babies. Due to the large number of polywags, there were two garbage shoots, each leading into a royal baby. As for the hairy belly, they both had some unidentified substance smeared on their bellies, even the aroma was unidentified. I don't have a scanner, but I will attempt to send you copies of the pictures.

OK, guys. Now you got me started. I remember lunch as being a boiled "green weiney" and some hot, salty green Kool-aid, Edgar. As for Chief Harkness, it does not seem that he was the type to be cast as the Baby, but I have to be cautious to doubt Dennis' memory lest he show me some more photographic evidence. Didn't the baby have a very hairy belly? I think it was the First Class guy.

Sorry Doug, although I have about five pictures of the royal baby, I can't make him out. I believe he was a SK2 from S-1. I also have a picture of the royal staff. There is the royal princess wearing a red dress, sunglasses, a mop of golden hair, and a wand with a gold star(kind of attrative for out at sea). Then there is,I believe, King Neptune'S wife, wearing a crown, a mop of white hair, and a white dress.(this I think is SHC Fields from S-3. Then there is King Neptune wearing a crown, a mop for a beard, white pants. Next to him is someone wearing a white shirt, white pants, and ribbons on his chest.(Davey Jones?). Next to him is,who knows, the royal page, wearing a toga, looking more like a Roman, and wearing a green bandana. I would probably remember more details, but was kind of disoriented after crawling through the aromatic garbage shoot, and being dunked backwards in the the makeshift pool at the fantail. All I can still smell is the steaks cooking on the barbeque on the fantail.

That was a great picture of Capt. Gordon just as he hit the water...I don't know what happened to the line, but I do remember a member of the Deck Force announcing "ding ding, ding ding, Boston arriving" as the Captain climbed up the ladder from the MWB that picked him up...this guy got some very, very, very dirty looks...As to the Royal Baby, as I recall, he was a Cook from the mess Decks...help me out here, Ed...

I would like to hear from of the guys in E div if they are still out there. I also remember a man overboard in June of 1067 when the highline broke and Captain Gordon went in the drink. Hello Boston Shipmates! This is Dawn Marsh, the daughter of Doug Marsh writing again. I'd like to wish each and every one of you a Happy Veteran's Day. As I wrote in my last entry after I went to the reunion, my Dad has instilled the kind of patriotism and pride that every one of us should feel every day. Never more than now, can you see and feel that in the heart of every American after the tragic events of September 11th. I can't imagine what veterans feel like when something like this happens. When I see news footage of an elderly man saluting the flag with his tattered uniform on from when he served, I can try to imagine the fire in his soul and the pride in his heart that he will always hold and when I hear that elderly man say he'd enlist today if he could, this is what makes us America. I am proud to have met so many of you and be kin to a man who served proudly aboard the Boston. It is men like you who gave us the freedoms we have today and God Bless every single one of you. I'm so proud to be the daughter of a USS Boston Shipmate! GO NAVY and GOD BLESS AMERICA! Much love, Dawn :):)

What makes this so special is that her Daddy, my son-in-law, is currently on the USS Kitty Hawk flying in Special Ops choppers in and out of Afghanistan. I am certainly very proud of him and ask that all my shipmates keep Jimmy Wilson, SSG, US Army in your prayers - - I hope I get to call him next year and wish him a happy Veterans Day. I will always cherish the experience of serving two years on USS Boston CAG1. I wasn't the best behaved marine on board and because of that I was given the "honor" of polishing the ships bell for four days. I was also the detachments scavenger for anything they happened to need at any given time, which leads me to tell you that that bell looked so darn good when I got done polishing it I decided it would look real nice hanging over my mothers front door. Since then my mom has passed away but the bell is still safely in my hands here in upstate New York. Thank God because it probably would have been scraped in 1974 along with the ship.

On this veteran's day my thoughts are on all those who have served our country in peace and war over the years; on those who today are going in harm's way; and those who, sometime in the future, will go the same route. I want to thank them, and all of my shipmates, for doing what had to be done. God Bless them, God Bless you, and God Bless America. On a historical note, "God Bless America, written by George M. Cohen, was debuted this date in 1938 by Kate Smith. For a spine tingling rendition of this song, see the 1940's movie, "This Is The Army" with Ronald Reagan and others . Kate Smith sings the song and it will bring tears to your eyes and make chills run up and down your spine.

THANKS.....,THANKS.....,THANKS ..... When we came home the parades from the past had passed us by. We are much older, and hope wiser now, and often wondered why? ..... Was it the 60’s,Woodstock, legalize drugs, Kent State, LBJ, Tonkin Gulf Resolution, was the nation in a state of mass confusion? Maybe the reason was because, it was not considered a popular war?, Edwin Starr’s song ..... “War!, what is it good for” ?.....Was it the politicians who were the only ones keeping score? Or the hippies with their .....“make love not war”,.....marches and demonstrations? Maybe the draft dodgers on their way to Canada to avoid protecting our nation? Or the very wealthy who were able to substitute the draft, for economics 101 ? Was it the media with their portrayal on the tv screen, graphic scenes , details at eleven? Was it the Pacifist with their..... “make peace not war”,.....all forgetting that their mere existence was secured by those answering the call? ..... Or the likes of Jane, Joan, , Hanoi Hanna, at this point does it really matter?. What was important , Were we to tarnish and ignore the sacrifices and heroic deeds made by those in prior generations?. Even though we were scorn by some, still manage to serve with courage and dedication. ..... We did not run, we did not hide, but we served like those before us, with relentless pride, and hoped in the process would keep their memories alive. ..... When I look at my grandchildren, I’m glad I stayed, and not alone . There were countless others like myself , who firmly stood their ground. Imagine if we all had gone to Canada, would this great nation still be around? ..... It is easy to make the right decision, when it is obvious and crystal clear. We made a judgement based on our convictions and upbringing, in spite of all our fears and tender years. ..... We didn't merely do the.....” right thing”..... because it was fashion, we did what we thought was.....” right.” .....So when someone asks you “where were you during these turbulent times?”, you can proudly say,” In the United States Navy , on the USS BOSTON in the Tonkin Gulf, carrying my own weight, while saying thanks to those before us who paid for our freedom with their very lives”. ..... We were not expecting ticker tapes, or a lot of hoopla and fanfare . Just wanted to let our country know ,that we were proud to do our share. And remember those who went above and beyond what was expected, and show that someone cared. ..... Let the protestors, pacifists and all those who wish to criticize our nation, have their say, they can scream and disagree, let it be known that the American Spirit and patriotism will never be silenced, and forever will be free. ..... Just wanted to say, THANKS.....,THANKS.....,THANKS....., to those I served with, before me and after, on this VETERAN’S DAY. Let us not repeat this, pray and support those who are now in HARMS WAY . .....

Here'a an excerpt from an OpEd piece in today's Wall Street Journal, by Arizona Senator and Navy hero John McCain. The man knows how to state the case: War is a miserable business. The lives of a nation's finest patriots are sacrificed. Innocent people suffer and die. Commerce is disrupted, economies are damaged. Strategic interests shielded by years of patient statecraft are endangered as the exigencies of war and diplomacy conflict. However heady the appeal of a call to arms, however just the cause, we should still shed a tear for all that will be lost when war claims its wages from us. Shed a tear, and then get on with the business of killing our enemies as quickly as we can, and as ruthlessly as we must.

He has mentioned several times that he would like to know where some of them are to get in contact, but he has no way of knowing. So, I am writing this in hopes that any of you who served on the Boston during those years could help me. I want to surprise him and find some of his old buddies that he served with. Also , I am trying to find the USS Boston SSN703 commissioning book for the years that he was on her. If any of you know who I could contact to get him a replacement copy of this book (his was lost in a fire) PLEASE feel free to email me with any information that may help in my two searches. Thank You and God Bless you all who served our country !!!

Thanks for the interesting background on the mount explosions during July+Oct '69. (It was LCDR W.H. Biggs who suffered a compound fracture of his thumb and lacerations). Before we docked at Subic on 7/30 we unloaded 500 5" bullets with suspected faulty detonator fuses for shipment to NavSta San Diego. The second misfire on 10/3 The Naval and Maritime Chronology also attributed to "premature explosion of a projectile", not a cookoff. If the SHIPMATES website expands to include a photo gallery, HM3 J. Jazdzewski has pics of the mount damage as well as many other outstanding images from the '68 + '69 Westpac deployments.

Hi Shipmates, Here are a few suggestions of what we can do to help out the Armed Forces in the months and years in doing what we as a nation needs to do. Number one find the local Navy-Marine Corps Relief. Mine is in Jacksonville, Florida and I sent them a donation. They help Navy and Marine families on a local level and all monies go directly to help. Two, E mail a ship or ships in what may be a long deployment. And send Christmas cards to the ships. We can still be a service as we were when we were on active duty. Those are my suggestion, what are yours? Thanks and God bless.

I just saw the decklog entries and there was no "cook-off" in either Mt 53 or Mt 54 when the guns blew up. In both cases the round was shot during a firing mission. I know this to be fact because the guy sitting next to me in Director Two pulled the trigger to shoot the gun. I was the JP talker to the gun mounts and I assure you that the Mount Captain in both cases told me that the round was shot, evidently prematurely armed itself, and exploded while exiting the gun. You have to remember that the bulk of the ammo we shot was made dring the early forties and had ample time to go bad. That gentlemen is the reason that the "bullet" did not go off right at the breech but instead was going up the barrel. Yes, the entire mount crews had both eardrums broken and the Gun Boss, LCDR Burdett (I think that's his name)lost a thumb from broken glass. He was standing on the bridge observing the firing mission when the windows blew out. Those of us in Director Two were very fortunate that the director was "buttoned-up" for GQ because a large portion of the gun hit the front of the director just below the optics that we were looking through and went over the Director. Oh, by the way, the way I heard it the guy that went overboard in Guantanamo Bay was a brand new leading seaman (had his pipe) who just happened to be outside the safety lines by mount 55 and was "aided" in this endeavor by one or more of his deck crew. I know this incident happened in Gitmo Bay because when we went to our man overboard stations (remember now I was a JP talker and on the sound-powered phone system) the first thinf the Capt normally did was turn the stern away from the man. We were in the bay and he couldn't do this, had to go forward, past this guy before he could turn the ship around to go after him and this extended the time the guy was in the water. The Capt was very concerned that there were "fish in the water" and if memory serves me correctly, this guy was taken out of the water in a cargo net - - just escaping the shark that surfaced below him. Next note: I love America and would gladly don the uniform again to protect our way of life but I am also slightly disenchanted with our justice system. The liberal judges installed in the last eight years scare the hell out of me with some of their rulings - - I for one am reluctant to allow this system to bring these terrorists to justice, look how long it took to finally get McVeigh. I favor good old revenge!!!

Dear Shipmates, Well even after over 6,000 people were killed in action in New York the commie rats, pigs and basic village idiots are beginning war protests on college campuses and elsewhere. We need to counter this activity in a positive way with total support of the Armed Forces and the USA. Our future is at stake. All of us as Shipmates need to stay unified and speak out and act. Let's not allow the Armed Forces and our beloved homeland have a repeat of the conditions prevelant during the Vietnam War. Let's make suggestions to each other as to what we can do as a team to counter this negativity then act as a body to put them in action. Thanks and God bless you Shipmates from all eras of the BOSTON.

Something to think about: Shipmate Matt Bromberg (LT 1994-1997) and his wife Christine both work in the financial district of NYC. His company has offices in the World Trade Center. I remember the "man overboard" bit quite well. As I recall, the 26 foot MWB got to him about three feet before either a yellow-tipped, or lemon shark arrived. The shark swam the length of the ship and looked like he was at a lunch buffet, just selecting his dinner. I also remember that a marine got his tail in a crack because he loaded his rifle when he saw the shark approaching the guy in the water...no officer told him to load his weapon. As to the walking thirty miles, uphill, in blinding snowstorms to a one room, unheated school bus, how did you rate bologna...the normal half sandwich was peanut butter and nothing...

Tom, I know your not going to believe this, but I remember the incident as it were yesterday. I was foward by the 8 inch guns standing on the wooden decks with a guy named Ron Laase who also worked in the Captain's office with me and several others. When a guy walks up to either Ron or one of the others and says "here hold my wallet" before he finish the sentence, the guy was over the side. It was a beautiful day, and the water was calm and crystal clear blue, and it was not uncommon to see sharks in these waters. If I'm not mistaken this was the same cruise, we fished a Cuban on a raft out of the water, trying to escape Casto, since I spoke Spanish, I was asked to translate during the interogation.

I remember that the painters didn't use brushes, rollers or sprayers. They used paint soaked rags in their bare hands. I also remember that the paint had been pretty well thinned down. Edgar! We all walked up hill both ways to school. There is a 5 mile minimum on such activity, and it is important that all parents back each other up on these facts so that our kids will realize how lucky they have it. There are other criteria for the amount of snow and the temperatures involved, not to mention the packs of ravening wolves (or coyotes here in AZ) that we had to fight off to keep them from eating our meagre bag lunch of a half boloney sandwich and a wormeaten apple. Oh, for the good old days. Dave

"In my day there were people overseas who were so hungry that they would work for the priviledge of our trash, and your throwing away good food yada yada." I would also remind them of how people were so poor that kids would jump into the aromatic olangapo river for coins. My daughter tells the story of how I used to walk to school in the snow 20 miles, uphill, both ways, sure.?

You are so right Doug. There was also a double meaning in B Division to "Lighting off." One meant that the heavy oil was being ignited by the torch and one meant something else. Ask the men of B Division who hung out in The California Bar in Subic Bay what the phrase meant. Ask for myself I didn't hang out in such places, I stayed on board and read TIME magazine! Just in case anyone wants to know a SNIPE is a mythical creature. In B Division SNIPES were also known as UNDERGROUND SAVAGES, The BLACK GANG, BILGE RATS and some names that are not printable on this page. SNIPES suffered in the very bowels of the ship working around noisy machinery, oil, grease, soot, dirt and temperatures that approached 120 degrees. This is one reason that the Navy chose young guys to do B Division's job. Old guys like myself would keel over and die toiling in the boiler rooms today.

I'm a little reluctant to acknowledge Doug Marsh as an honorary FT, but his daughter was so nice to have there that she makes up for all of his shortcomings. It was great to meet Edgar, too. He has contributed so much to this log. He, also, brought his lovely daughter with him. We really have a Boston family. For all of you who couldn't make this one, I hope you will begin planning for next year now, just as the committee is. I also hope all of you (You know who you are) who have little bits of memorabilia stashed in a trunk in the attic will consider donating it to the committee. No one will ever take better care of it than they will, and it will be preserved for many shipmates to enjoy in the future. Who got the ship's wheel? I also hope that all of you will look up the current events section of this site and read Captain Komorowski's address at the banquet. I saw a lot of misty eyes, through my own, as he expressed some of my feelings so well. Thank you Captain, and thank you all for being SHIPMATES. Dave

So, that picture is from some time between 1955 and the end of 1959. With a little more study we could probably narrow down even further. Thanks for posting this!

While surfing around the net I found a great picture of USS Boston with Forrest Sherman alongside her. It is: The picture was taken before the radars were upgraded, probably in the early 60's or so. Just thought someone might be interested

I am writing as a proud daughter of a USS Boston Shipmate. My Dad is Douglas Marsh who was on board from 1965 to 1968 in the OE division. For as long as I can remember, I have been intrigued and most curious about all of my father's endeavors. He taught me from day one, the importance of patriotism and loyalty to my country, something I think many lack. My Dad always took me to airshows, military expos, you name it, we did it, and i loved it. I have always respected what my father has done in his lifetime but as you get older you begin to understand your parents so much better. I have become terrific friends with my mom and dad and to have shared this event with my father is something that I'll never forget. He has always made me feel special for everything I've done, but to have had the honor to sit amongst him and his fellow shipmates and feel the energy in the air as the same stories were told to each other and to see the tears in grown men's eyes while captain K spoke of why he loved the navy, is the most incredible of gifts my father has ever given me. Thank you to all of you who made me feel special and to going to the reunions. Thank you to the gentleman who remembered one of my dad's closest friends, TOM JORDAN who passed away. He must have asked everyone that was on board around the same time as Tom and finally, the nite before we were leaving asked a man in the elevator if he knew Tom, and he said YES. I can't wait until next year. See y'all in Baton Rouge!

First, may I add my thanks and congratulations to our reunion committee for yet another great job. Please know how much we all who benefit from your hard work appreciate it. Second, I wish to pass on to all you history buffs a strong recommendation for David McCullough's book, "John Adams". In addition to being a thoroughly enjoyable read, the book details the maiden voyage of the frigate Boston (Number two in the line). On her first crossing she carried founding father and future president Adams, along with his young son and also future president John Quincy Adams to France in 1778. Note to Art: You might be able to get McCullough's permission to reprint an excerpt or two on the web site.

I must express my profound gratitude to the USS Boston Reunion Committee for allowing Sandy and me to have one of the most memorable experience of our lives. Seeing our shipmates after 32 years brought back memories that can never be replaced in our hearts. All of us FTs made a pledge to intensify our efforts to contact more shipmates for future reunions. I thank Doug Marsh for all his kind words concerning the honor bestowed upon him and have written him an especially endearing e-mail to let him know how much we enjoyed - - his daughters presence at the reunion. Seriously this was an experience that all of our shipmates should try to participate in. I missed John Taylor but will make up for that in the future. I didn't miss Capt. K and am so glad that I had the opportunity to share in his wit and wisdom. Again, kudos to the committee for such a well planned and executed fun weekend.

I served aboard the Boston after I graduated from high school in 1965. I was stationed in Norfolk Va and I was flown to the ship while it was in the med. In 1966 I put in for a position in Flag. That same year after I was given the position we searched for 3 bombs off the coast of Spain. I hope some of the guys I served with in the Flags staff are still out there.

A tremendous and resounding "WELL DONE" to the committee for the outstanding job they did with this year's reunion. It sounds trite, but I have to say that it only gets better and better. It was great seeing all the shipmates that made it this year, and I truly hope that those that could not get to this year's get together can do so next year. I want to thank everybody for making my daughter welcome...she too is planning for next year already. She and "El Jefe's" daughter hit it off and I really enjoyed seeing Ed again after all these years.I also want to thank Slank and Dennis for voting to make me an honorary FT for the reunion, but I still wonder about the necessity of having to forget how to read and write in order to qualify...Again, thanks to all for a memorable occasion and God Bless all. By the way...does anybody have the recipe, or formula, or chemical analysis of the "Guided Missile" as constructed by the bartenders at the Wyndham?

Attended my first reunion,I want to thank the Committee and all those responsible. Dave had mentioned how great the reunions were, his definition falls short, it was beyond that. It was nice to meet Art for the first time, and Shipmates like Doug,John,Woody,Dennis,Garry,,Henry, Shipmates from all eras too nemerous to mention. My only complaint is during the bell ceremony, during Taps, there was a helicopter hovering above agitating the pollen in the air, causing sniffling around me which was contagious and irritation of the eyes. Thank you for making my daughter feel welcomed, she is already making plans for next year.

Found a bunch of old pictures to bring with us. I do have some sad news for the shipmates and especially the guys in Fox Division - - Gregory John Levine, FTM3, '68 to '70 has passed away. He realized his dream of graduating from St. John's and becoming one of New York's finest. He retired after 20 years on the force and died a mere two years later, 10 Oct 1996. Chuck Shallish and I have been looking for him for several years and it appears that Greg did undercover work and that is apparently why we couldn't locate him. He retired from the "Public Morals" division. Smooth sailing to a very good friend and shipmate.

Well guys, we're heading down to the wire on this reunion. As of today we have nearly 450 people coming, and I fully expect a few more to drop out of the clouds, come July 20 or so. We have Shipmates coming from the WW II cruiser, the guided missile cruiser, and the submarine. What most of them have discovered is that BOSTON men, regardless of when they were aboard, all relate to BOSTON and the BOSTON experience. We must be doing something right, because some of the guys will be coming to their fifteenth reunion this year---that's every one we've held since 1987. And, there are about forty who are coming to their first BOSTON reunion this year. We welcome them all with open arms.

This week I helped deliver the granite base for our memorial to the old Boston Naval Shipyard. We'll dedicate this memorial to 225 years of BOSTON service to America on Friday morning (7/20).

BOSTON---from 1776 to Tomorrow!

Hi Shipmates. This is a request from any of the World War 2 Veterans. Tell your shipmates about life on the BOSTON during those days, where you guys deployed, what battles you were in. What it was like in Japan after the surrender. I would love to hear your stories. And last but not least thanks to all the WW2 vets for your service. The shipmates from other eras appreciate you guys very much.

My father served as a RM3 on the Boston during WWII. Unfortunately, he passed away in Nov 1979. Would like to hear from any shipmates knowing/working with him.

I always read and hear what a great sight this is, and I agree whole heartedly. What I always hope for, though, is that those of us who find it, enjoy it, and relive the memories that it invokes for us, will take a minute and join the Shipmates, preferably with a life membership, so that we can keep this sight, our great reunions, and our awsome newsletters alive and strong. I, personally, don't know of any organization of our size that has this kind of stuff going for them, with people who get more satisfaction out of what happens here. I read about men and situations that go back almost 60 years, and up through the conversion to Vietnam and on to SSN703. What a great heritage to be a small part of (Those of you who know me will exuse my use of the word "small"). But, truth is, we each did our part to make all that happen. WE are the reason that all these "BOSTONS" were the great ships they were to serve on or in. These are OUR memories we're keeping alive, the times that shaped our lives because we happened to be on a great ship or boat named BOSTON. Those of us who gather in Andover this summer will stand around, BS, study memorabilia, look for ourselves in pictures, look at each other wondering how that old guy could be the kid that had the bunk under us and what happened to his hair, and how did he stay so skinny for 30 years. And, we will shed some tears, for lost years, for friends lost and found, or just for having that feeling once again that only "shipmates" know. But, I want all of you who can't join us this year to know that the reunion will be held for you another year, and you, too, can experience all of this. To ensure that happening, we need dues paying members. They are the life blood of the Shipmates organization and the only way it has been able to continue and grow. The terrific men and women who devote so much time, energy, talent and love to this endeavor, could never continue if there were no sustaining members. Please show your gratitude for what they have made possible for you with their selfless efforts by thanking them and by joining the USS BOSTON Shipmates. See you next month!

Dave, I was going through some old photos I took back about 1982 or 83 and have a few great shots of you from the bridge while you were the lookout on watch while we were transiting the surface. ...geez, almost 20 years ago!

On my entry of May 24 2001, I gave my Phone number wrong. My area code changed but my mind did not. Not that I expect a Phone call, but would dearly like to have one, especially from 60 to 64 A Div shipmates. My correct phone number is 843-821-8540
