It was great to find the Boston's page and great to find some familiar names. She was a great ship because of her great crews. Thanks so much for the page. Keep up the great work. Wesley Starr crewmember from January 1968 to July 1969. Hope to hear from a lot of the crazy guys from "B" division.

I served on the USS Boston from 1958 to June, 1962. I was transferred to the Boston from the decommissioned USS Macon-CA-132. I served as a Storekeeper in S-1 Division. Shipmates I remember: SK2 Doice Carrington, SK2 Thomas and SH3 Nat Caine. There are more, those just came to mind. I also was a member of the 5th division. At one was the leading seaman in charge of the Executive Office Passageways

I reported for duty on the BOSTON as a HN in September 1967. The ship was in Kaoksiung, Taiwan. I departed as a HM3 in February 1970, a couple of months before decommissioning. I lucked out and got shore duty at the Headquarters of the Military Sealift Command - Atlantic, in Brooklyn, NY. I was a HM2 when I was discharged in December 1970. I have many memories from my two and a half years onbroad the ship. Some of them include: our ship's Marines reporting to sickbay for pints of Dr. Lee's potion, aka Boston Brew (cough syrup laced with codeine), three days in Typhoon Elaine as we headed toward Yokosuka, Japan (that defined the meaning of heavy weather), the missile hit from a F-4 Phantom jet that mistook us and the HMAS Hobart for low flying enemy helicopters (2 killed, 7 injured on the Hobart but they refused our help), the premature shell explosions in one of the 5" gun barrels on mounts 53 and 55, the initiation of Pollywogs as we crossed the Equator, the revenge of "San Miguel" whenever we docked in Subic Bay, PI (pass the DC plug, please), the smell as you crossed the bridge into Olongapo City (throw me coin sailor), the sight of the aft section of the USS Frank E. Evans, DD-754 in a floating dry dock in Subic Bay after she was cut in half by the carrier HMAS Melbourne (check out the EVANS web site for photos and stories from the survivors), lost sleep (some genius decided to put sickbay below the 8" gun turrets), spraying the cockroaches in the galley's bakery (and you guys thought you where eating raisin bread), Doctor Shrier's first appendectomy as we steamed westward to Hawaii (I hurried into his office to tell him we had the patient ready and I found him reviewing a book of surgical illustrations!!!), cruising in the Caribbean Sea with a broken propeller shaft (lean-to men), 10 cent beers and 25 cent mixed drinks at the EM club in Boston; treating casualties returning from liberty call (were we at war with ourselves?).To sum up my BOSTON experience, IT WAS AN ADVENTURE, NOT JUST A JOB!!!! Greetings to the Corpsmen, Medical Officers and other crew members of the BOSTON.

I was surfing the net when I came across this great site. It just so happens that my dad, John Farkas is a Plank Owner on the USS Boston (CA-69). During WWII he was an F3C in F. Div and he served on the USS Boston until 2/46. He would like to hear from his old shipmates who served during this time. Unfortunately he doesn't have a computer so anyone interested could contact me and I'll pass it along.

Yo shipmates! I enjoyed attenting the reunion in Burlington Vermont. I served 1965 - 1969, and this was my first reunion. It was nice seeing Snake, Bryan, Gus and Bob who served in M division with me, during my time on the Boston. I am hopefull that next year there will be more of the 1965-1969 M-Division guys who attend, and would like to hear from any of you who pick up this message. Cheers for now!

I too had a great time at the reunion as a first timer from OI Div. '61-'65. And Jack Vice from OI got the 50/50 as a first timer. This will definetly not be the last time you'll see our faces. Only hope that next year in Baltimore more shipmates from OI can attend and then in Boston in 2001. The city just doesn't look the same. In 1962 the tallest building was the Custom House, but it's still BOSTON. Lets keep in contact.

The 1999 reunion in Burlington,Vt. was wonderful. "M" division was well represented by several years. It was great to see the guys from "B" division too. """Snipes will prevail""". Next year the reunion is in Baltimore, July 14,15,16. There are several shipmates living in the area who were in "M" division during the late 60's. I want to hear from all of them, and then see them in Balto. If you're out there and you see this please send me a note. Smitty I know you can make this one !!!! David Ratliff --- we have been trying to locate you for years. Gus from aft engine room says you're in West Va. Maybe someone knows of other shipmates where abouts too. it was great to see Artichoke and Morgan and Ski--- we even made new friends with a cook from Ohio--Earl & Pat Harris. Their first reunion !!! They had a ball ....... Send me some e-mail guys and let's plan to see each other in July 2000 !!!!!! Come on guys let's have the engineering dept. the largest group in 2000.

Hello, I served onboard USS BOSTON (SSN 703) from 1982 to 1986. I was onboard during the Indan Ocean/Around the World Cruise of 1983. The time onboard BOSTON was the best of my life. My tour on BOSTON helped me to decide to make the Navy a career. I am currently onboard USS PENNSYLVANIA and will retire in a couple of years. I reported to BOSTON as a YNSR and left a YN2. I am looking forward to hearing from any of my shipmates that I served with during that time.

For some weeks now, I've been reading through the e-mail that is sent to the shipmates, getting in touch with shipmates that I haven't had contact with in 10 to 30 years, looking for people that I haven't thought of in that long, and I have noticed a few things. From everything I've read, no matter when, or for how long, or on which hull number, or in what division we served, or in what capacity, those months or years were among the most important and memorable of our lives. More important than where we were, seems to be what we were doing and the men who served with us. I've worked a lot of places before and since, but I can't give you a list of people who worked with me anywhere. Yet, none of us seems to have a problem coming up with a roster of people we would like to see or hear from again. We have men out there doing "people searches" and telling the shipmates they are in touch with about the website, and asking for info on others. And so, we grow. So many of the messages mention positive experiences and memories, that in spite of the rigors of life at sea and combat, one has to beleive that there was something special on board all the BOSTONS. We are keeping that special something alive today as we write and talk and meet with each other. I am not surprised that FOX and 6th, 8th and 10th divisions are so well represented (I don't suppose any other divisions feel the same?), but it is great to see. Every one of the THOUSANDS of shipmates we've found has something to contribute to the BOSTON'S memory. Thanks to the Shipmates Committee and everyone who has ever worked on a reunion and especially Art and Nancy Hebert for their labor of love for the ship we all love so well. Served on board from 1961 to 1965. I was only 17 when i reported on board but i had a great time. I got out of the Navy in July 65 and went back in the Navy in Nov 78. I will retire from the Navy Nov 30 1999 with 25 years. Will be retiring as a Senior Chief Master-at-Arms (MACS) I have seen the old Navy and the New. I can honestly say that the old Navy was less complex and much more fun. When I joined the Navy someone told me that when you stop having fun, its time to go home. Im on my way home. I really miss the old girl (not my wife :))) the USS BOSTON CAG1.

Greetings to all who served on The Boston in any capacity. I was the last Medical Officer on CA69 from late '68 to early '70. Many of the richest and most powerful memories of my life came from that experience. I was enormously proud to be the Medical Officer of that ship and still am. Why, I may even make it to the reunion 1999.

Hello SSN703! My name is Joanne Russell and I designed the insignia for the best sub the Navy! I think about "MY SHIP" all the time and all the wonderful memories I have. I just found out about the web site. I am proud to be a Plankowner and I am very sad about the decommissioning. I now work for the government and when I meet someone who is in the Navy, I have to brag about my sub and all its awards. Thanks for the great memories and the hospitality shown to me and my family. I wish I could have been at the decommissioning ceremonies and took a little piece of history with me.

USS BOSTON (703) Aug.1988 - Nov.1992 Memories !!! Couldn't wait to get out but we sure had fun during that time. Everytime we see the clock at 7:03 we think of the boat and all the friends we made.(or didn't make) We are in New Mexico now and have been ever since driving away from Groton. Nov.2,1992. Hello to everyone ! We kinda have our own little Boston community going on out here. Hoby Follis,Marc Coder, Brian Halvorsen and Chris Schreiber all work at Intel. Bob Pitzer works at the one in Arizona. I know Pat Tribble is in NC,Roger Houseman is in MI, I see that Jamie Nygaard is in GA And for the rest of you...where have you gone? We've lost touch !! - The guys are starting to taper off now but they still talk Navy whenever we go out. We've got two girls and they're not allowed to date Navy guys.(not too many of them here in the desert) Write us a note. Whoever is in charge...have a reunion in JAMAICA !!! And when is the Navy gonna get new uniforms ??? Take care---Chris and Lisa

Served on the BooBooMaru from 16 Apr 66 to 17 Apr 70 in Fox and 10th Divisions. Worked in Weapons Control but GQ and condition watches were in Director 2. I have tried to keep in touch with a few folks, Joey Schaberl, Kenny Lussier (Derf), "Mother Parsons". I just recently contacted a couple of folks from the guestbook. Would like to hear from Ralph "Ralph Rotten" Perry, Richard "Dickless" Less, Gary "Slank" Slankard, "Minnie the Mauler" Minarovich, "Willie the Worm", Greg Levine (Ugly), Chuck Shallish (Bad), and anyone else in Fox or 10th Division. After getting out of the Navy, I decided that I didn't like the military so I enlisted in the Air Force. I eventually finished my degree, went to OTS at 35 yrs of age and came out as a Communications Maintenance Officer. Went into Mobile Communications and played Army and when this stopped being fun I retired as a Captain. Now am a Senior Systems Analyst working in the Special Operations Directorate at Robins AFB.

I served aboard Boston CA-69/CAG-1from 1968 until her decommissioning in 1970. I was the duty Master-at-Arms that day, and was by default the last man to leave her. I got transferred to the Faragut and was in boston when she got towed to Philadelphia. I didn't like the sight of a proud ship being towed to be scrapped, still don't. I was in 10th division, and worked in both Weapons Control, and in one of the AN/SPQ -5 radar rooms. I can't remember which one, but it was the one on the weather decks, not the one below. Looking at the notes written by former Boston sailors, I don't find too many from the time I served. I was stationed on the Boston (CA-69) from July 194444 until April 1946. I served the entire time in the radio shack attaining the rank of RM2c. Part of the time I was Press Radiooman and assisted with the publication of the "USS Boston Radio News Press", "printed daily except in U.S. Ports". Also was happy to have had a small "behind the scene" part in the publication of the weekly paper, "The Bean Pot". I still have some old yellowing issues detailing some of the ships statistics and history beginning with the keel laying on June 30th, 1941 going to September 25, 1945. Interesting reading!

1967-JAN 70, under PAOs Davenport & Oakley--"Good Evening, Men of Boston"--that was me doing the nightly newscast on 1-MC. Great memories--just one: seeing Boo Boo Muru from Victoria Peak, Hong Kong-- Great people--JO2 Thackery, Jim Mancuso, Ellis Baldwin, James Marcus Brown, Chris Brown, Mike Morris, Mr. Polk, where are you? Saw Dale Davenport's photo as Pennsylvania editor. Subsequently for me: UPI, Gen. Electric Broadcasting, USNR PAO (I screwed up and someone said-- son, you're officer material, '78-'98, ODS in-country)--nothing so poignant as to be "at war in the company of brave men"..."...shot at without result" (usually--except when "Made at Raytheon--Waltham, Massachusetts" shrapnel landed on deck--anyone remember that?).

Also current New England tourist webpage states that Button Bay is the place where BOSTON was scuttled. This in NOT true. Boston and the other gundalows with Congress galley were run aground and burned in FERRIS Bay just south of Button Bay. This is now shown on maps as Arnold Bay.

Served during last two SeaDragon tours -- 67 -69, I guess. Left as FTG-2. Main battery. Started in Fox Division. Ended up in 6th, if I recall. They never knew what to do with us. Went to watch the ship leave Boston for the last time. I guess I really loved that ship. Met an officer on my reserve tin can who said, when he found out I was on the Boo Boo Maru, that he was in Nam while we were and that we were the best gun fire support ship on the line -- bar none.

Just got off the phone with an old shipmate who called to tell me about the reunions and this web site. I served proudly on CAG-1 from September 1959 through August 1961. I left as a QM3, having spent the entire tour in "N" Division. The shipmate who called me, James Ammons, is seeking old shipmates from that period, but has not yet entered the world of Cyber Space. You can reach him at (516) 667-6532. I was heart broken to hear she has been scrapped. My oldest son now lives in Boston, and during a recent visit I went to the old Charlestown shipyard and walked out onto the now derelict peir 11 and found myself quite overcome with emotion.
