The seventh BOSTON was a LOS ANGELES (688)-class nuclear-powered attack submarine.
Specific operations of this BOSTON, like other boats in the Silent Service, are simply not discussed. However, we are proud to discuss many other aspects of our SSN703.
The mission of the SSN is multifold, encompassing duties in which their targets are enemy submarines; in antisurface warfare, mine laying, covert operation support, pinpoint shore target neutralization using cruise missiles, and multiforce operations involving Navy, Air Force, and other military units. The LOS ANGELES-class SSN is considered by some to be the ultimate hunter-killer.
The seventh BOSTON was a much-decorated ship. The crew distinguished themselves on numerous occasions by meritorious service and outstanding performance. Awards included the Arleigh Burke Fleet Award and the Marjorie Sterrett Readiness Award, both of which are presented to one ship in the Pacific and one ship in the Atlantic.
In 1998 the BOSTON participated in a UNITAS South America deployment.
Each quarter the Commanding Officer rewarded outstanding crew member accomplishments by recognizing the Sailor of the Quarter, Junior Sailor of the Quarter, and Sailor of the Year.
The USS BOSTON Shipmates rewarded the SOQs and JSOQs with savings bonds and congratulatory letters. We were honored to host each Sailor of the Year and his wife at our annual reunion.
The last commanding officer was Commander David A. Olivier, USN.
The USS BOSTON served the United States citizenry with the conspicuous gallantry, unflagging patriotism and citizenship, and outstanding performance that have been the hallmark of all BOSTONs since 1776. We are very, very proud of the officers and crew of the SSN703.
